A good school is a place where children learn enough worthwhile things to make a strong start in life. However, it is not easy task and this is a challenge of a leader in managing a school. There are many factors to become a good school. This study focused on the size, learning system, developing facilities, managing environment, and conducting an internal and external quality assurance system.
I used three ways to get the data and information; observation, interviews, and visit to the school’s website. In Waimea Intermediate School (WIS), I interviewed the principal, two teachers, several students, and visited to the WIS’s website. After that, in Junior High School (JHS) No. 7 of Jambi City I interviewed the principal and vice principals by email, WhatsApp, and visited to the school’s website. Furthermore, I compared to obtain the similarities and differences.
Every schools have different sizes. Based on the data, the sizes of WIS consists of 650 students with 22 classes, 66 teachers/staff. The number of students of each class are 28-32 children with a teacher. Meanwhile, JIS No. 7 of Jambi City has 1105 students, 33 classes, 89 teachers/staff. The number of students of each class are 33-34 children with a teacher. It means that both of schools; between the number of teachers, classes, and students were directly proportional.
Quality learning system is influenced by teacher creativity and availability of facilities. According to the survey, WIS has a good environment in the classrooms and the learning process focused on student-centre. As a result, students have enjoyed, active, creative, and happy. In JHS No.7 of Jambi, learning system in the class was similar to WIS, but support of facilities in the classrooms were different from WIS.
Development of school facilities is part of school management. WIS has developed facilities such as modern classrooms with wide screen smart TVs, large integrated library, technology block, and playground areas. Similarly, JHS No. 7 of Jambi City has science rooms, a multimedia room, and outdoor basketball facilities. The differences of both were technology block and modern classrooms. WIS are higher technology than in JHS No. 7 of Jambi City.
An interesting thing about these two schools was the school environment. Both are clean and healthy schools. Waste can be managed properly. That way, children enjoy learning.
To control the schools, both of them have conducted internal and external quality assurance system. For examples, to improve the quality of teaching, WIS has conducted of self-evaluation based on recommendation of school review results. Similarly, JHS No.7 of Jambi City has done. To illustrate, to reach the school achievement, the school has to evaluate based on their experiences. Meanwhile, external evaluation in WIS is school review under ERO but in JHS No.7 of Jambi City are the mapping quality of education under Directorate General of Primary and Secondary Education and school accreditation under National Accreditation Body.
In conclusion, a good school is very influenced by the quality of management. Quality management will produce quality school. In other words, good management equals a good school.
